Where have the emails gone?

Hi Reader,

I've missed writing to you these last couple weeks or so! The Open Spiral website is getting a full rebuild, and much of my sit-at-the-computer time has been going toward that. In case I haven't told you, Open Spiral is my publishing imprint.

When ghostwriting clients first started asking me to help them publish their books, I felt honored that they would entrust me with this.

I interviewed other ghostwriters who help with publishing, took courses, joined IBPA, and learned how to coordinate all that goes into publishing a book, ie the various levels of editing, cover design, layout, distribution, publicity, marketing. Three books in, I've found my footing and I'm ready to bring my publishing imprint front and center.

So, more on Open Spiral soon!

And things are busy away from the computer too. A new family has joined our little commune. They have a ten-year-old daughter, and she has appointed me her chicken-house assistant. She asks me to collect eggs with her at least four times a day.

The baby goats are nearly grown and we've made friends with the families who will take them when they're ready. They have jobs waiting as milk producers and fire wise landscape artists.

With all this going on at home, I've been so cherishing the two hours per day that I spend in the SDA Writing Studio!

We meet Tuesdays, Thursdays, and now Saturdays, 8 to 10 am Pacific. Fifteen minutes of conversation about the craft and the books we're writing followed by ninety minutes of mics-off cameras-off writing, then fifteen minutes back together at the end.

I'm revising and expanding my book planning guide to focus on prescriptive memoir, blitzing through a chapter draft each week for the first rough drafts.

These quick little conversations at the beginning and end of the studio sessions are productive too. We get very, focused. And so motivated when we get clear on what readers are going to find in our books.

If you have a book that needs steady rhythm and good company, you're welcome to join! Most members commit to two out of the three writing days, and we can add more days as the group grows.

Happy springtime writing!

Laura

Hi Reader, I made a cartoon of my goat Precious making soap, and I had a lot of fun doing it. I never thought that would be something I could learn how to do. Yep, I used AI tools. Several of them.AI is here, like cars and cameras. You can still paint a portrait by hand if you have the skills and the time. You can still walk and ride a bike places. It's better for you and for the environment. But most of us live in places that weren't designed for bicycles and pedestrians. So much depends...

Hi Reader, Looking back over the summit interviews I've done over the years, it's interesting how many of the authors, when I asked what got them across the finish line, said something like, "I had to call the book done. My publisher was waiting for it." Someone was waiting for the book, and that's what got it finished. You've probably heard me and others talk about how a book takes a village. Beta readers who can tell you whether they're hearing what you're trying to say. A coach who helps...

Hi Reader, Three goat kids left for their new farm this week, and the milk keeps coming! 10 quarts a day. We're freezing most of it while setting up the business that will connect all this milk with people who can use it, and while building infrastructure for the intentional family we're growing. This means we're in motion from first light until the afternoon heat makes rest mandatory. In between, the time I spend on calls with clients and working on my book in the Writing Studio feels like a...
