Whose outline are you wearing?

Hi Reader,

Three goat kids left for their new farm this week, and the milk keeps coming! 10 quarts a day. We're freezing most of it while setting up the business that will connect all this milk with people who can use it, and while building infrastructure for the intentional family we're growing.

This means we're in motion from first light until the afternoon heat makes rest mandatory. In between, the time I spend on calls with clients and working on my book in the Writing Studio feels like a break!

Most new coaching clients come to me with an outline they've already created. Sometimes they have several versions of it. But trying to write in it feels like walking around in someone else's ill-fitting clothes.

The outline usually came from somewhere sensible. A chapter for each of the ten modules of a signature program, lessons itemized in the order we learned them, or the structure you perfected in academia, where each point is thoroughly defended before it is fully made.

Nothing wrong with any of those. They're just clothes cut for a different body. Outlines organize your content, that's what they do.

If you think of structuring your book as making a map though, a map that your reader can walk through, things fall into different places. A map moves a reader from where she is to where your book can take her.

So making maps is what we've been doing in my Map Your Book workshop. Spend two hours with me, and you will leave with a chapter-by-chapter structure made to measure for your book and your reader.

The next available dates are at the end of July. Register her for $97.

Hi Reader, I made a cartoon of my goat Precious making soap, and I had a lot of fun doing it. I never thought that would be something I could learn how to do. Yep, I used AI tools. Several of them.AI is here, like cars and cameras. You can still paint a portrait by hand if you have the skills and the time. You can still walk and ride a bike places. It's better for you and for the environment. But most of us live in places that weren't designed for bicycles and pedestrians. So much depends...

Hi Reader, Looking back over the summit interviews I've done over the years, it's interesting how many of the authors, when I asked what got them across the finish line, said something like, "I had to call the book done. My publisher was waiting for it." Someone was waiting for the book, and that's what got it finished. You've probably heard me and others talk about how a book takes a village. Beta readers who can tell you whether they're hearing what you're trying to say. A coach who helps...

Hi Reader, I went quiet for a bit. A cold knocked me flat, and the newsletter waited while I slept through most of the sniffles. I'm back on my feet now, and eager to get back into things. While I was lying around sniffling, I got the joyful news from not one but two of my clients who have had traditional publishers offer them contracts for their books. Yay! I won't share the names of the two authors yet. The details are still being worked out. I can offer big congratulations to Mick Kubiak...
